Two-Color Flasher Circuit

Overview

One of 10 educational circuit boards we designed for a private training institution. The circuit uses a 555 timer IC set up with two independent RC time constants to alternately flash red and blue LED groups, creating a striking two-color flasher effect. Two separate trimmer potentiometers let each color's flash rate be adjusted independently.

Purpose and Goals

Our customer's goal was to give students hands-on soldering and PCB assembly practice through interactive, visually satisfying circuit boards that are easy to understand and build. To that end, we handled the full schematic and PCB design ourselves, using a connector-based power input and DIP (through-hole) components to make assembly as simple and approachable as possible for students.

Development Process

After the needs analysis, we designed a two-channel 555 astable multivibrator circuit with independently adjustable flash rates and drew up the schematic accordingly. For the PCB design, we chose DIP components students could easily solder, clear silkscreen labeling, and a DC barrel jack input protected against reverse polarity. We delivered the schematic and PCB design to the training institution.
